You won’t get pressure or upselling, but you will get an honest conversation with a real AC installer who wants to get it right for your home and family.
Professional AC Installation and Replacement from Comfort Bros
Working with top brands like Bosch and AC Pro, we handle air conditioner installation and air conditioner replacement for homes throughout the county — from single-family houses in Carlsbad, condos in Del Mar, older Spanish-style homes in La Mesa, and new builds in San Marcos. We’ll tell you when a repair is the smarter call. But if a new air conditioner installation makes more sense, we’ll explain why. You can browse our full range of air conditioning services for everything we cover.
When Should You Replace Your Air Conditioner?
Most central AC systems last 15 to 20 years in San Diego’s mild climate. Beyond that, parts become harder to find, and efficiency drops each season. Consider a home AC replacement over repairing your unit if a few of these signs sound familiar:
- Your unit is 15+ years old
- Repair quotes are creeping past $1,500
- The system still uses R-22 refrigerant
- Some rooms cool just fine, while others never catch up
- Energy bills keep climbing even though your usage hasn’t changed
- The outdoor unit has gotten noticeably louder than you remember
One repair on an older system isn’t always the wrong call. But when two or three of these signs line up, HVAC replacement is often the better option, and an AC replacement lets you fix sizing or duct issues at the same time.
AC Installation Options for Your Home
From coastal Encinitas to inland Santee, we see three main types of AC systems in our service area.
Central air conditioning installation
Central AC installation is the go-to for homes with existing ductwork. One outdoor condenser, one indoor coil, ducts already in place — a clean, whole-home solution for residential AC installation. If your ducts need work, we can do that during your HVAC installation.
Ductless mini-split installation
We install ductless mini-split systems. They’re great for additions, converted garages, older bungalows in La Mesa or Chula Vista without ducts, and anywhere you want room-by-room control. One outdoor unit serves multiple indoor heads and is more efficient than a central air system.
Heat pump installation
A heat pump cools in summer and heats in winter with a single system — a smart pick if your AC and furnace are both aging out. San Diego’s mild climate keeps them efficient year-round, from Oceanside and Del Mar to Poway and Ramona. We’ll run the numbers so you can weigh upfront costs against long-term savings.
Proper AC Sizing Matters More Than Most Homeowners Realize
A proper AC sizing calculation considers square footage, ceiling heights, window orientation, insulation, ductwork, and household size. We run it on every AC installation before recommending a unit, following the U.S. Department of Energy’s proper AC sizing guidance. An oversized AC short-cycles, cools unevenly, and wears itself out years early. An undersized one runs constantly and never catches up. Either way, if it’s not sized correctly, you pay for it in comfort, in bills, and in shortened equipment life.
AC Installation Estimate Guide
What Affects Your AC Installation Estimate?
AC installation costs can vary based on your home, current system, comfort goals, and the condition of your existing equipment. These are the main factors Comfort Bros may review during your in-home estimate.
Home Size
Larger homes may need more cooling capacity, while smaller homes may require a properly sized system that avoids short cycling and wasted energy.
Current System Age
Older AC systems may be less efficient, harder to repair, or closer to the end of their service life, which can affect your replacement options.
Current System Type
Replacing a central AC system, heat pump, or ductless mini-split can involve different equipment, installation steps, and comfort considerations.
Existing Ductwork Condition
Leaky, damaged, undersized, or poorly designed ductwork can affect airflow, comfort, and whether duct repairs or improvements are recommended.
Desired System Type
Your estimate may change depending on whether you want a standard AC replacement, high-efficiency system, heat pump, or ductless comfort solution.
Comfort Issues
Hot rooms, weak airflow, humidity problems, loud operation, or uneven cooling can help determine what type of system or upgrades make the most sense.
Interest in Financing
Financing options may help homeowners compare repair versus replacement, plan around their budget, and move forward with a system that better fits their comfort goals.
What Happens During an AC Installation Visit?
Most installs take one to two days. A typical install day looks like this:
- Step one: Protect floors and walkways, then remove old equipment.
- Step two: Level and place the outdoor condenser. Refrigerant lines and electrical runs cleanly to the indoor unit.
- Step three: Install the indoor coil. Your existing ductwork usually stays, but we’ll flag any leaks or damage before starting.
- Step four: Vacuum the lines, charge the system, and bring it online.
- Step five: Test airflow at every register, confirm the thermostat reads correctly, and walk you through the new system.
If anything unexpected comes up, we’ll make sure to let you know.
