HVAC Systems: What Are the Options?

choosing hvac system

When you shop for a new HVAC system, it is easy to become overwhelmed by the vast array of options available on the market today. There are pros and cons to each system. Knowing what is the right option for you and your family can be challenging to figure out.

An HVAC system works by circulating air throughout your home to keep it at a comfortable temperature. There are 4 main types of HVAC systems you can choose from for your home or office including:

1. Heating & Cooling Split Systems

The most common systems are split systems. This means that there is a unit for each purpose – one for creating heat and one for creating cool air. These usually have an indoor and an outdoor system. The outside system typically uses compressors and refrigerants to cool the air. The inside system is typically found in the basement of your home or other storage space and creates hot air.

2. Packaged Heating & Cooling Systems

Packaged HVAC systems are an excellent choice for people who don’t have a lot of space to spare in their homes. A single unit is able to both heat and cool the air and circulate it through your house. Typically compact in size, these units are known to be very efficient and easy to maintain. It should be noted, however, that these are not recommended for extremely cold climates.

3. Duct-Free / Mini-Splits

When you have a home or office that simply cannot have ducts installed, a ductless mini split is the way to go! These units can incur a large upfront cost but can be a great solution for controlling individual spaces.

4. Hybrid Split System

This system can be the most effective at lowering energy costs becuase it has the ability to switch between gas and electricty as it’s power source. This gives the homeowner ultimate control. The hybrid system does require a traditional duct system and thermostat.

Now that you have an idea of the types of systems available on the market today, you’ll want to determine what size system you would need for your home or office. Take into consideration how often the space is used, the size of the space and the control you want to have over the system.
